Biography

Pilar Alvarez has worked as a teaching artists and administrator for over the last six years in Atlanta, the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. Under Pilar’s guidance, her students have created their own commercials, monologues, short plays, theatre masks and puppets. Pilar passionately believes that the theatre arts are a vital part of every student’s education because they aid the cognitive, social and emotional development in youngsters and young adults. She has taught theatre performance with The Theatre of All Possibilities, Big Up Kidz and The Southwest Arts Center. Pilar directed youngsters in musical productions with STAR Education in Los Angeles and mentored young playwrights in Juvenile Hall with Each One Reach One in San Francisco. For over two years Pilar was a Company Member and Education Director at the Ovation and LA Weekly Award winning Open Fist Theatre Company. Open Fist Theatre performance credits include; The Devil with Boobs (Jacoba), Love Water (Egg Girl), Saint Joan and the Dancing Sickness (Rev Topps), Linda Shaw (Stage Door) and Snow White and Rose Red (Snow White). Pilar holds a Bachelors of Fine Art in Theatre Performance from The College of Santa Fe, NM (Cum Laude). She is a graduate of the Training Artist Institute at The American Musical Theatre of San Jose, Theatre of the Oppressed for Cultural Fieldworkers Workshop at the University of Southern California and the L.A. County Regional Blueprint for Arts Education Teaching Artist Program. This June Pilar finished her coursework for her Masters in Theatre for Youth from C.S.U. San Bernardino (Phi Kappa Phi). She is currently completing her thesis, a readers theatre and playmaking program intended to advance the English Language Arts proficiency levels of second graders in the Los Angeles Unified School System, while working a 19 week theatre arts teaching residency in San Francisco.
