Biography

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Rory Alexander took to the arts at age 11 when he began playing the clarinet. Soon thereafter, Rory added musical theatre, choir, and bassoon to his resume. Throughout his youth, Rory focused most of his energy on performance, participating in annual school plays and musicals, and making privileged appearances in district honor bands, regional honor choir, and the London New Year’s Day Parade as a marching band drum major. Upon completing his primary education, Rory entered California Polytechnic State University (San Luis Obispo) as a music major. Rory spent his first year at Cal Poly studying bassoon, but after the one-year hiatus from singing, he followed his heart; Rory began taking voice lessons and made the switch to a vocal performance emphasis. On campus, Rory became very involved with various choral and instrumental ensembles, and in addition to performing, music directed a student-run pop/rock a cappella ensemble and studied choral conducting under Dr. Thomas Davies. Rory participated in the Cal Poly Theatre & Dance Department’s annual One-Act Festival, and earned leading roles in the student-directed musicals Songs For A New World and Side Show. With the Cal Poly Opera Workshop, Rory performed in scenes from Die Fledermaus (as Frank) and Le Nozze di Figaro (as Bartolo), and highlighted songs by Kurt Weill in The 20th Century with Kurt Weill. Off campus, Rory was featured as a soloist by the local opera company Opera San Luis Obispo in the recitals Spring in Cambria and Broadway by the Sea, and entertained as Samuel in their production of The Pirates of Penzance. He also appeared on the community theatre stage with Sorcerer Productions, by whom he was featured as Sabu/Lead Tenor in The Producers, and as ensemble in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Following graduation in June 2010, Rory moved to the San Fernando Valley where he continues to study privately with vocal coach Lisa Harrison.
