His thirst for blood soon expands to include his unfortunate customers, and the resourceful proprietress of the pie shop downstairs soon has the people of London lining up in droves with her mysterious new meat pie recipe! Sweeney Todd opened on Broadway in 1979 and was immediately hailed as a masterpiece of the American musical stage. It starred Angela Lansbury (Mrs. Lovett), Len Cariou (Todd) and Victor Garber (Anthony) and was directed by the master storyteller Harold Prince. The production was nominated for 9 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
