Biography

Vonzell Carter was born in Washington, D.C., and spent his time growing up between there, Georgia, North Carolina, and Maryland. He made the plunge into the world of acting in high school, under the direction of Andrew Grenier. In 2002, he went to Miami University (OH), graduating four years later with a BA in Theater (focus in Acting), and a minor degree in Chinese. During that time he was invited to the Region III KCACTF (once as an Irene Ryan scene partner, and once as an Irene Ryan candidate). The stage production of Pearl Cleage's Bourbon At The Border (in which he played Charlie) was also invited to play at the KCACTF in 2005. In addition to theater, Vonzell was also immersed in the world of digital filmmaking. He was one of the first members of the M.A.F.I.A. (Miami Association of Filmmakers and Independent Actors), working in over 30 film projects through his undergraduate career. The most notable were “Daywalker” (audience award, Miami University Film Festival), and “Fingerman: Dr. London and the Triangle Force” (screened at OIFF and Dances with Films)-both directed by A.J. Rickert Epstein. His own short film, “Take 3”, was screened in Oxford, and Cincinnati. In May of 2009, he received his Master of Fine Arts degree in Acting, from California Institute of the Arts. In 2010, he co-created an action team called Thousand Pounds, producing short martial arts based action sequences online; the team videos have grossed almost 3 million views. Vonzell is one of the main choreographers for the team.
