The Classical Theatre Lab presents "Something of Silver: A Musical of The Merchant of Venice" adapted with music by Tony nominated Tony Tanner (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat). The story follows Shylock, a moneylender from Venice’s Jewish ghetto, who makes an interest-free loan to an upper-class Christian merchant. When the deal sours, years of discrimination surface as Shylock makes a harsh demand for repayment. Comedies end in weddings and “The Merchant of Venice” closes with three happy couples. But this is a fearless comedy, an ironic one in which the quality of mercy is cross-examined and complex issues of difference are unmasked. Last year Tony Tanner thrilled audiences with CTL’s musical of “As You Like It” and this year spectators will be captivated again by his beautiful music and an amazingly talented and accomplished ensemble of actors.
